About Us

Who Are We?

The Bentonville Schools Assistive Technology Team ( ATeam) was developed as a means to support students, teachers and families with choosing and using assistive technology in the learning environment. The team includes representation from curriculum, special education, general education, occupational therapy, speech language pathology and physical therapy. Although team members come from a variety of backgrounds/specialties, their common goal is student participation and success.

What is Our Mission?

The ATeam's mission is 3 fold:

1. For students in general

*To promote and support Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

2. For students with special needs/disabilities

*To promote the consideration and effective use of necessary assistive technology (AT) tools and services.

3. For teachers, support staff, and families

*To provide information and resources about AT and UDL

What is Universal Design for Learning?

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an important concept! UDL provides the opportunity for all students to access, participate in, and progress in the general-education curriculum by reducing barriers to instruction. UDL is a practice of providing multiple means of accessing information, a variety of avenues for staying engaged and different opportunities to express knowledge.

What is Assistive Technology?

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) states that: Assistive Technology (AT) device means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medial device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of that device. (Authority: 20 U.S.C. 1401(1))

IDEA defines AT Service as: any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device. (Authority: 20 U.S.C. 1401(2))

*Disclosure Statement: The ATeam members do not have any financial or non-financial relationships with the resources reviewed.
